I agree that's a cleaner solution, but it also works a lower percentage
of the time than the $CC hack. I've found a surprising number of FLOSS
packages that don't care what you put in $LDFLAGS. Hopefully this in
the Gnu guidelines somewhere...
But hey, in the case of nagios, maybe it does work well.
