There were no support for specifying a socket until a few minutes ago ;)

By default (no -H) the library connects to the localhost socket (I
believe it's harcoded in the library and can be overridden by one of the
hardcoded my.cnf config files paths (including ~/.my.cnf).

I just added a -s/--socket switch to specify a socket. Since Sourceforge
appears to be down I can't guarantee it will appear in the next daily
snapshot, but if you're in a hurry you can get the patch from my Git repo:
