Thanks to Philip Marcus and Marc Powell for the help.  Philip suggested I turn on debugging.  That helped me to track down the problem. The problem was that the libraries I installed weren't seen by the
plugins.  crle turns out to be utility that checks and/or modifies the
library paths that programs search for when they execute a program  Now
the plugin returns the right data.
