[Nagiosplug-help] check_http against tomcat

I'm trying to use check_http (1.4.13) to poll an Apache (2.2.3) / Tomcat (5.5.25) installation.  The plugin in giving the following error:

$ ./check_http -H jboss --ssl
CRITICAL - Cannot make SSL connection
19750:error:14077438:SSL routines:SSL23_GET_SERVER_HELLO:tlsv1 alert internal error:s23_clnt.c:578:
HTTP CRITICAL - Error on receive

The site pulls up fine with Internet Explorer, but not with FireFox.
