Here is a newbie question. How can I tell if nrpe was compiled to allow
command arguments?
I send a command from the server but the output doesn't seem to work. It
works fine on the client however.
I know the client has nrpe.cfg with the params to not blame nagios.
>From the Nagios server I am sending
check_nrpe -H <client address> -c <plugin> -a <argument for plugin>
The error I get on the server
CHECK_NRPE: Received 0 bytes from daemon. Check the remote server logs
for error messages.
Client logs show
Sep 1 14:57:45 nrpe[254436]: [ID 4341885 daemon.error] Error: Request
contained command arguments!
Sep 1 14:57:45 nrpe[254436]: [ID 9300267 daemon.error] Client request
was invalid, bailing out...
If I run check_nrpe from the client it also fails with same errors.
This was a solaris 10 system I was given to maintain so I don't know
much about it.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

David Bruce over on the pnp4nagios-users email list answered a similar
question recently thus:
Look at these two references
http://docs.pnp4nagios.org/templates/start
Special Templates: http://www.pnp4nagios.org/pnp/tpl_special
You will create a file in ~/etc/check_commands called check_nrpe.cfg
which will contain the line "CUSTOM_TEMPLATE = 1". This tells
pnp4nagios to use the $ARG1$ (check_load) in your Nagios service
definition as the name of the template to use.
You will still get the default pnp template until you make new
templates in ~/share/templates. You can copy or simlink to the
distributed templates in ~/share/templates.dist. They are excellent
starting points and there is one for each of your Nagios Service
checks listed below.
I confess I haven't tried this advice myself yet - I'm still using a
more kludgy workaround which involves configuring a separate check
command for each nrpe check type and copying the standard templates to
templates having the new command names.
The PNP4Nagios email list is at
https://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/pnp4nagios-users
Cheers,
Jim

Claudio:
I have not used mrtg to analyze switch performance, but I have looked at
it carefully and likely will use it soon.
As I understand it, below is the data flow involving the switch, mrtg,
and Nagios:
switch <-----> mrtg -----> mrtg log file <----- check_mrtg <----> nagios
ie: mrtg runs independent of Nagios and queries the switch status and
logs the result.? Then Nagios, through the plugin, reads the log and
reports the results.
There error you get is: "Unable to open MRTG log file"
The check_mrtg plugin runs as the OS user Nagios.? Therefore, I suspect
that if you look at the permissions on the mrtg log file, the Nagios
user or group does not have read, nor does public.
Just my thoughts.? Hope it helps.
