I have not used mrtg to analyze switch performance, but I have looked at it carefully and likely will use it soon.<br />

As I understand it, below is the data flow involving the switch, mrtg, and Nagios:<br />
<br />
switch <-----> mrtg -----> mrtg log file <----- check_mrtg <----> nagios<br />
<br />
ie: mrtg runs independent of Nagios and queries the switch status and logs the result.  Then Nagios, through the plugin, reads the log and reports the results.<br />
<br />
There error you get is: "<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #333333; font-family: 'Lucida Grande','Trebuchet MS',Verdana,Helvetica,Arial,sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 18px;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: arial,serif; line-height: normal; border-collapse: collapse;">Unable to open MRTG log file"</span></span> <br />

The check_mrtg plugin runs as the OS user Nagios.  Therefore, I suspect that if you look at the permissions on the mrtg log file, the Nagios user or group does not have read, nor does public.<br />
