Hi,
I have the same problems. When I telnet to the server where the 
nagios-nrpe-deamon is running I get the following result:

debian:~# telnet 172.30.0.10 5666
Trying 172.30.0.10...
Connected to 172.30.0.10.
Escape character is '^]'.
Connection closed by foreign host.

The deamon I used on the debian-server is
nagios-nrpe-daemon_1.9-5_i386.deb
The nagios plugin I used on the nagios-server is 
nagios-nrpe-plugin_1.9-5_i386.deb

I configured everything just like the nrpe-readme.

Do you have any idea what I did wrong??
