Distributed monitoring means Nagios just sits and wait for checks to 
arrive. The return to pending state probably means you've either not 
enabled the state retention file, or several instances of nagios is 
running (not several processes, that's normal).
Try /etc/init.d/nagios stop; killall -9 nagios; /etc/init.d/nagios start
